The 300 “letter series” cars were the vehicles that really rekindled interest in performance among major American manufacturers after World War II, and thus can be considered the muscle car’s ancestors, though much more expensive and exclusive.

Chrysler has recently started using these designations again for sporting near-luxury sedans, using 300M from 1999, and continuing the 300 series with a new V8-powered 300C, the top model of a relaunched Chrysler 300 line, a completely new rear wheel drive car launched in 2004 for the 2005 model year. This is disliked by some fans of old Chryslers who do not approve of the reuse of a 300 letter series designation. Unlike the first series, the second does not have 300 hp engines, except for today’s top-line 300C.

The 1957 300C is generally considered the classic year of the 300 “letter series”. New styling was brought in, with a yawning wide front grille and fins; the Hemi engine was upgraded to 392 in³ (6.4 L) and 375 hp (280 kW), or as a very limited edition 390 hp (290 kW) version (18 built). A convertible model was available for the first time. The car had a number of red, white and blue ’300C’ medallions on the sides, hood, trunk and interior. 1,767 coupes and 484 convertibles were built.

With performance equal or superior to many of the world’s most exotic sports cars, it would have been easy for Toyota engineers to forget that Supra is still a Toyota at heart. But because it is a Toyota, they were able to incorporate speed, style, quality, dependability and Toyota’s legendary reliability.

Supra is powered by a high-performance, twin-cam, in-line six-cylinder, 24-valve, electronically fuel-injected engine. In normally aspirated trim, it produces 220 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and a maximum of 210 lb./ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm. In addition to a specially tuned intake system, it incorporates split-exhaust manifolds for reduced engine back pressure, enhanced power output and greater fuel economy.

The normally-aspirated Supra is available with either a five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmission.

Supra’s turbocharged engine produces 320 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 315 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. Supra’s twin-sequential intercooled turbos provide quick response at low engine speeds and high-volume output at increased engine speeds. During low-speed operation, only one turbocharger operates, using less exhaust energy to improve response and torque from a standing start. In the middle-speed range, the second turbo comes to idle at a pre-set exhaust pressure for a smooth transition from the primary to the secondary turbocharger. Both turbos operate at full boost in the high-speed range.

Due to ever-increasing emission requirements, the Turbo’s six-speed manual transmission has been discontinued. The four-speed electronically controlled automatic has been developed to extract the maximum from this engine. The automatic’s control system adjusts shift timing, lock-up timing, hydraulic pressure for the clutch and brake, and engine torque in order to deliver virtually seamless shifts. In manual mode, selected by a console button, the transmission shifts quickly into each gear as it is selected. Shift times in manual mode are quicker than in fully-automatic mode.

Toyota Kijang First Generation 1977-1980

Description : The prototype was displayed at 1975 Jakarta Fair, and production began in 1977. The first Kijang is a boxy little pick-up truck powered by 1.2 liter 3K engine matched to 4 speed manual transmission. The pick-up with rear body and roof was also produced. The Kijang Minibus was built by a local company.
First introduced on the 9th of June 1977. It was a boxy pickup truck with a half door, the window was made only from plastic and tarp canvas. The door hinge can be seen from the outside. The KF10 generation was using a 3K engine (like the ones fitted in the Corolla). It uses a 4 speed manual transmission.
This first generation Kijang was famous for being called “Kijang Buaya” (English: Crocodile Kijang) because the engine hood can be opened to the side of the car. This car sold 26,806 units until the 2nd generation Kijang was introduced.

Renault 4 CV (1946-1961)

The Renault 4CV was an automobile produced by the French manufacturer Renault from 1946 to 1961. An economical “people’s car” inspired by the Volkswagen Beetle, it was the first French car to sell over a million.

The 4CV was originally conceived and designed covertly by Renault engineers during the German occupation of France during World War II, when the manufacturer was under strict orders to design and produce only commercial and military vehicles. A design team led by Fernand Picard, Charles-Edmond Serre and Jean-Auguste Riolfo envisioned a small, economical car (similar to the Volkswagen Beetle) suitable for the economically difficult years which would inevitably follow the war. The first prototype was completed in 1942 and two more prototypes were produced in the following three years, with the 4CV ultimately presented to the public and media at the 1946 Paris Motor Show.

On the 4CV’s launch, it was nicknamed “La motte de beurre” (the lump of butter) due to the combination of its shape and the fact that many early models were painted with sand yellow-colored German army surplus paint intended for the Afrika Korps. The 4CV was powered by a 748 cc engine producing 17 hp, which was coupled to a three-speed manual transmission. Despite an initial period of uncertainty and poor sales due to the ravaged state of the French economy, the 4CV had sold 37,000 units by mid-1949 and was the most popular car in France. The car remained in production for more than a decade afterwards; it was intended to be replaced by the Renault Dauphine, launched in 1956, but the 4CV in fact remained in production until 1961, only a year earlier than the more expensive Dauphine was discontinued. In event, it was replaced by the Renault 4 which used the same engine and name as the 4CV and sold for a similar price.

The Honda Prelude was a front wheel drive I4-engined coupe that was manufactured by Honda between 1978 and 2001. It spanned five generations of cars but was discontinued upon the release of the fourth-generation Honda Integra in Japan in late 2001, due to its decreasing sales and popularity.

The Prelude’s perennial competitor has been the Toyota Celica, another I4-powered coupe introduced several years prior to the Prelude. Throughout the 1980s, it was challenged by the Nissan Silvia, Isuzu Impulse, Mitsubishi FTO, Mitsubishi Cordia (later the Eclipse), and the Mazda MX-6.

1953 Cadillac Le Mans Concept

The Cadillac Le Mans was a concept car developed by Cadillac in 1953. It was named for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France, which Cadillac competed in in 1950. The design was a low-profile (51-inches to the windshield frame), two-seat, fiberglass-bodied roadster. It was powered by a 250-HP version of Cadillac’s 331 CI V-8, a power output not reached in production Cadillacs until 1955. Though 4 units were built, the model never went into production, and it would be nearly 50 years before Cadillac developed another vehicle with a similar design concept, the Cadillac XLR. Of the four, 1 is documented as having been destroyed in a fire; the other 3 still exist with 1 of those currently in the Cadillac Historical Collect
